Nubia 120W Gan5 Pro Charger Review: Fast Charging & Smart Power Distribution

Charger is an essential item in our daily lives, and a suitable charger can make a huge difference. The Nubia 120W Gan5 Pro Charger continues the ID design of the Dao series in its packaging. The packaging is a simple white square box, with a three-dimensional rendered image of the charger on the front. In the lower-left corner, there's text indicating "2Type-C+USB-A," and the entire packaging design is quite sophisticated.

The internal layout of the packaging is well-organized. The Nubia 120W Gan5 Pro Charger is on top, and beneath a black card with the "nubia" logo, you'll find the accompanying cables, cushioned by foam for excellent protection.

The included cable is a C-to-C cable in a striking red color, which is highly recognizable. It’s made with high-quality materials, and the cable ends are crafted from matte black plastic, with anti-bending treatment, making it convenient and durable.

The Nubia 120W Gan5 Pro Charger features a polycarbonate shell, with a metallic finish and matte treatment, giving it a premium feel and making it resistant to dirt. The front displays the 120W power rating and the nubia logo, presenting a clean and robust industrial style.

On the other side of the silver-gray casing, there's a prominent "Dao" character, which is highly distinctive.

The input end is equipped with a foldable two-prong plug design, making it easy to store and preventing damage to other items when placed in a laptop bag.

The port panel is black, with the manufacturing details and output information for each port printed on the surface, allowing for easy confirmation of the appropriate devices for each port.

This Nubia 120W Gan5 Pro Charger features a 2C1A three-port configuration, with a total rated power of 120W. The two Type-C USB ports support a maximum output of 100W individually. When used together, they provide 60W+60W, totaling 120W, which means you can charge two laptops simultaneously without any issues.

The Nubia 120W Gan5 Pro Charger measures 31x56x84mm and weighs approximately 237.7g, about the size of a credit card. The thickness is well-controlled, so it won't block nearby sockets when plugged into a power strip, and it won't take up much space in your bag when you’re on the go.

This Nubia 120W Gan5 Pro Charger is equipped with Nubia's Neochage 2.0 fast charging technology, boasting a peak power of 100W and supporting dual laptop charging (60W+60W). Even when all three ports are used simultaneously, one port can still charge a laptop (60W), while the other two ports maintain a mid-power output of 30W for fast charging tablets, phones, or power banks. The C1 port supports various open protocols like QC, AFC, FCP, SCP, PE, PD, etc.

Using a current tester, the A port's charging protocols were measured, showing that it supports up to 30W fast charging. The USB-A port supports Apple 2.4A, Samsung 5V2A, QC2.0/3.0, Samsung AFC, Huawei's FCP and SCP, DCP protocol, and MTK PE+2.0.

Further testing of the USB-C1 port reveals support for Apple 2.4A, Samsung 5V2A, DCP protocol, QC2.0/3.0, AFC, FCP, SCP, PE2.0, PD3.0, and PPS fast charging protocols. The C1 port also supports 5V3A, 9V3A, 12V3A, 15V3A, 20V5A voltage levels, as well as a 3.3-21V5A PPS voltage level.

The USB-C2 port supports the same protocols as USB-C1, with identical single-port output performance, supporting power-blind insertion for easy use.

Next, I tested charging an iPhone 12, Xiaomi 9, and an Asus laptop simultaneously. The Nubia 120W Gan5 Pro Charger intelligently adjusted the power distribution: the iPhone 12's charging power fluctuated around 15-18W, while the Xiaomi 9 peaked at 18W. The Asus laptop drew the most power, around 33-37W. The overall charging current remained stable, and the charger automatically distributed the appropriate current based on the connected devices, preventing potential damage from excessive current during charging.

Using the USB-A port to charge an iPhone 12, it took about 29 minutes to charge from 5% to 60%, with the charging power reaching up to 23.82W. The charging speed was indeed faster than the original charger, though the difference in perception wasn't significant due to the intelligent power distribution, making both chargers fairly similar in effect.

Next, I tested charging a Xiaomi 9 using the USB-C1 port. Starting from about 60% charge, the charging power reached a maximum of around 5V2.27A. As the battery approached full charge, the current dropped to around 0.97A until the battery was fully charged. This test demonstrated that the charger has an intelligent charging mode, adjusting output based on the charge level to protect the phone's battery life.

Finally, testing with a laptop showed that the output voltage consistently remained around 19.49V, with the output current fluctuating based on usage, reaching peaks of over 2.5A, with the power fluctuating around 50.22W. These tests suggest that the charger's compatibility is quite good.

Regarding heat generation, I was initially concerned that a high-wattage charger like this might overheat easily. However, after actual use, my concerns proved unnecessary. The charger didn't generate much heat, even when charging multiple devices simultaneously. During sustained power output of around 85W, the charger's surface temperature peaked at around 43.7°C. While it felt warm to the touch, it wasn't hot enough to cause discomfort. For a 120W high-power charger, this level of heat control is quite good.

Overall, the Nubia 120W Gan5 Pro Charger offers a satisfying experience. With three fast-charging ports supporting simultaneous charging of multiple devices, one charger is enough for business trips or travel. Additionally, the charger includes multiple layers of protection, such as short-circuit protection, temperature protection, overcurrent protection, overvoltage protection, charge-discharge protection, hardware detection protection, etc., ensuring safety in daily use and providing peace of mind.
